Opinions. How are they formed? Through others, through education, through experience? It's amazing how much opinions vary from person to person. Lately, everyone seems to have an opinion about something. Some stand quietly behind theirs while others loudly rant about their newest opinion.
While I've considered it a beautiful thing that we can have different opinions about a wide range of topics, recently I've been truly shocked. I thought it was more than an opinion - perhaps, human nature - to care about others. It seems as though I was giving the human race the benefit of the doubt. And, I was wrong. Some people seem to have a holier-than-thou mindset where thinking about others never crosses the mind. I wonder if people will realize we live on one planet, we're all connected, we're all in this together. We might as well not pass judgement on those more or less fortunate, but rather strive to help our neighbor. I've been foolish enough to think that everyone must have at least a small part of them that wants to give, that thinks outside of themselves. The recent opinions I hear from my peers and in the news have blurred my sense of humanity.
But maybe, it isn't them...I wonder if it could be me. Am I judging their opinions to harshly. Am I simply a dreamer? Could I be avoiding the harsh reality that peace may never overcome animosity? If so, where did I pick this up? I wonder if it was through my education, my family values, my experiences growing up or maybe a combination of all of these things. For now, all I can do is believe that what we do affects others. Our society is capable of changing for the better and everyone's opinions and actions help shape that.
