I'm about to close the door of an exam room after putting up x-rays. The other MA runs up and asks if she can grab some gauze before I close the door. No problem, right?
Normally, no. However, as I stepped to the side holding the door open for her (with my hand in the space that holds the door to the wall); she steps out bringing the door with her and smashing my finger tips between the door.
Ouch, ouch, ouch! She pushes the door back open so that I can release my fingers. I immediately head for the sink and run my fingers under cold water. I reach for the mini-fridge, pull out a cold water bottle to substitute for the lack of an ice-pack and begin to feel light headed, which triggers me to sit down.
The other MA comes out and notices that I'm not looking too good. She apologizes extensively for the accident. As soon as the next patient leaves, she cleans the room and has me tilted back in the chair. She then runs to Starbucks next door to get ice and makes me a pseudo ice-pack.
After about two minutes of being in the chair holding the ice over my throbbing fingers, I get up and decide to get the room ready for the next patient. Admittedly, I felt very "wimpy" for getting light headed over smashing my fingers. Trying to minimize the attention to the situation, I proceed to bring the next patient back. While I'm setting her up, I begin to feel light headed again. I rush out of the room and go back to my station feeling terrible again. The other MA notices and tells me to sit in the doctor's office (now that there are no exam rooms open). I was trying not to be weak and it backfired. I felt worse.
Finally, the MA tells the doctor the situation. He looks at my purple, swollen fingers and instructs me to keep icing them. He then brings me Advil, tells me I look pale and instructs me to stay seated. He then says he wants me to take two x-ray views of my hand.
The verdict: No broken bones! While my fingers still have a visible door mark and feel VERY tender, I can at least say today was unconventional and I'm able to tease the MA about the day she tried to break my fingers. ;)
